Winter 2026 | A report on life featuring recent news, reflections, and other odds and ends
We signed a rental in Vancouver and just moved in. Even though we don’t know what’ll happen down the road, I’m excited to experience all four seasons of the city and to furnish the place. I spend quite a lot of time at home so investing in a space that is comfortable is going to be really nice.
I was reminded by Alina that it’s often more productive to achieve 3 very small goals a day. If you brain dump everything you want to do or accomplish into a long to-do list, especially with ambiguous tasks, it’s likely that you might not do any of them. Instead of my goal being to ‘get a job’ I’m letting it be to ‘send a follow-up email to X’. Every goal can always be made smaller and it’s a skill to be able to frame the right goals for yourself based on your situation.
There are a ton of running groups in Vancouver. I'd like to try one out. In Tokyo, I usually ran solo (sometimes I ran with Frank) around the Toyosu Canal. In Vancouver I've been doing leisure runs around the seawall. I miss the social element of groups where you can chat with people who aren't in your own line of work.
One of the things I've been thinking about for a few years now is improving my upper body strength. There will be a lot of small fitness studios near my new place, however they are mostly for personal training and I'm hoping for a class environment. There is an Orange Theory nearby which I have never looked into before as it seemed expensive and kind of boujee, but I'm thinking of trying it out because they have really set schedules and mixed routines.
I'll eventually figure out what I'm going to do next for work. Given the current job market, I'm not in an urgent situation and know that so many people are looking for work. I'm also not relaxed about it, it kind of eats away at me to not have any certainty. Should I transition into independent contract work? Should I join a startup? I do think that my line of work is shifting and it's important to be open-minded and flexible.
